The Binance heist has prompted crypto exchanges to review their security systems and take steps to better protect digital money from hackers.
October 30: Cryptocurrency exchanges are reviewing their security systems and calling for greater industry-wide information-sharing after a record $6.3 billion hack of Binance exposed vulnerabilities across the digital asset industry.
The attack has prompted rival platforms to take precautionary measures as cryptocurrencies become more closely connected to mainstream financial markets. Coinbase said it had adjusted systems used to store cryptocurrency keys offline, while Kraken said it was monitoring security incidents across the industry for lessons that could strengthen its own defenses.
The pressure to improve security is growing as US regulators under President Donald Trump push for deeper integration of digital assets into the financial system.
“For crypto to reach its full potential, the security situation must be addressed immediately,” said Chris Perkins, head of crypto at Franklin Templeton.
Binance Halts Withdrawals After $6.3 Billion Attack
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, halted withdrawals following Thursday’s attack and said it would use company funds to cover the losses.
Co-CEO Richard Teng said on X that the “complex attack” may have started with a compromised software engineer’s laptop. The breach reportedly gave hackers access to systems used to process withdrawals.
Binance later identified additional breaches. Software designed to erase traces of the attack also complicated the investigation.
Analysts have linked the incident to North Korea, citing similarities with previous attacks attributed to the country. US blockchain analysis firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis said the bulk of the heist unfolded in around 20 minutes late Thursday.
North Korea routinely denies involvement in cryptocurrency thefts. Its mission in Geneva did not respond to requests for comment.
Despite the scale of the incident, industry executives said they expected Binance to have sufficient resources to cover the losses and did not anticipate wider financial repercussions.
Bitcoin fell more than 4% on Thursday, while ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, declined by more than 5%. Both tokens recovered some of their losses on Friday.
“Our expectation is the industry writ large will actually not suffer material losses, even though Binance is obviously going to have to deal with the exploit directly,” said Josh Riezman, chief legal and strategy officer at crypto firm GSR.
Crypto Exchanges Review Employee Security and Internal Systems
Security experts said social engineering may have played a role in compromising the engineer’s laptop. The tactic involves deceiving employees into sharing sensitive information or granting unauthorized access to company systems.
Harry Donnelly, CEO of crypto risk infrastructure company Circuit, said businesses were planning additional employee training to help staff recognize and respond to social engineering attempts.
Coinbase said its changes to offline cryptocurrency key storage systems were made “solely out of an abundance of caution.”
Kraken said its full-time security teams search for possible vulnerabilities every day and that it was monitoring incidents across the industry.
The breach has also renewed concerns about how quickly hackers can move stolen funds before exchanges identify an attack and token issuers intervene.
Tether and Circle Freeze Nearly $2.37 Billion Linked to Binance Hack
Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle moved to freeze funds connected to the incident.
Tether said it had frozen nearly $1.57 billion linked to Binance, while Circle reported freezing $800 million.
However, freezing stolen assets is not possible in the same way for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether, which are not controlled by a single issuing entity.
Chainalysis said the hackers appeared to be using sophisticated money-laundering patterns that the company had not previously observed.
The incident has renewed calls for exchanges, blockchain analytics firms, and token issuers to share information more quickly when suspicious transactions are detected.
OKX Calls for Real-Time Crypto Hack Detection System
Some industry executives have called for a coordinated system that would allow cryptocurrency companies to identify attacks and respond before stolen funds move beyond recovery.
OKX CEO Star Xu said the industry needs a real-time alert system that allows participants to share information immediately after a hack, coordinate responses, and temporarily freeze suspected stolen funds.
GSR’s Riezman said the incident could push the industry to improve security practices as traditional finance and digital assets become more closely connected.
The Binance breach has exposed a wider challenge for cryptocurrency exchanges. As digital assets become more integrated into financial markets, security failures at major platforms could carry consequences beyond the companies directly affected.
