From childhood memories to adult life, her journey highlights the experiences of many expatriates in the UAE.
Growing Up Alongside a Nation
For Lumia Khan, the UAE is more than a country of residence. It is the only home she has ever known.
The Pakistani entrepreneur, who serves as Founder and CEO of Furrari Events and Marketing, has spent all 40 years of her life in the Emirates. Long before she was born, her father arrived in the UAE more than five decades ago, becoming part of a generation of expatriates who witnessed the country’s transformation from a young nation into a global hub for business, tourism, and innovation.
Over the years, Khan’s personal journey has evolved alongside the UAE’s own remarkable growth story.
“We have not only witnessed the UAE’s incredible growth over the decades, but we have grown alongside it. This country is the only home I have ever truly known,” Khan said.
Lessons From a Multicultural Upbringing
Growing up in the UAE exposed Khan to people from different cultures, nationalities, and backgrounds from an early age. She believes that the environment played a significant role in shaping her outlook on life.
Living in a multicultural society taught her the importance of adaptability, respect, and resilience. At the same time, she credits the country’s stability and security for giving residents the confidence to build long-term lives and pursue ambitious goals.
“One of the things I value most about the UAE is the sense of safety. Growing up here, we never felt uneasy or unsafe,” she said.
According to Khan, that sense of security creates an environment where people can focus on their aspirations, raise families, and plan for the future with confidence.
“That feeling of security gives people the confidence to dream, take risks, and build a future. It creates an environment where families can thrive, and children can grow with a strong sense of stability.”
Learning to Embrace Change
Few countries have evolved as rapidly as the UAE over the past four decades, and Khan believes living through that transformation has taught her one of life’s most valuable lessons: adaptability.
“The UAE is constantly evolving, and living here teaches you how to evolve with it. It has taught me not to fear change but to embrace it,” she explained.
Throughout her career, she has navigated different industries, economic cycles, and personal challenges. Each stage required learning new skills, adapting to changing circumstances, and finding creative solutions.
For Khan, those experiences reinforced the belief that resilience and innovation often create opportunities even during uncertain times.
Inspired by a Culture of Ambition
Khan believes the UAE’s success is rooted not only in visionary leadership and world-class infrastructure but also in the values that shape everyday life.
“The UAE’s infrastructure, vision, and people-first approach bring out the best in those who live here. The values of ambition, hard work, innovation, and community are deeply embedded in the culture of the UAE,” she said.
Watching the country continuously reinvent itself has encouraged her to adopt a similar mindset in her own professional journey.
“Watching the country grow and evolve over the years inspired me to believe that anything is possible with dedication and perseverance.”
Building Communities Through a Shared Passion
One of Khan’s most meaningful contributions has come through community building.
In 2020, after adopting a dog, she launched a small group called Dogventure, bringing together dog owners interested in exploring the UAE’s outdoor spaces. What started as a simple hiking community quickly grew into something much larger.
The initiative eventually evolved into Furrari, a community-focused platform designed to support pet owners through events, education, well-being initiatives, and shared experiences.
The platform attracts members from across the UAE, including residents who have relocated from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Singapore.
“Beyond organizing events and experiences, I see my role as helping people and their pets feel connected, supported, and part of a community,” Khan said.
A Different Definition of Success
After four decades in the UAE, Khan believes success should be measured by contribution rather than personal achievement alone.
“The UAE is a place of opportunity, but meaningful success comes from contributing, not just achieving,” she explained.
Her advice to fellow expatriates is rooted in purpose and patience.
“Find something that genuinely matters to you and build around that purpose. Be patient with the process, stay adaptable, and don’t be afraid to start small.”
It is a philosophy she has applied throughout her own journey, focusing on creating value and fostering connections rather than pursuing quick wins.
The Place She Calls Home
Reflecting on her life in the Emirates, Khan speaks less about business accomplishments and more about gratitude.
She credits the UAE with giving her the freedom to pursue her ambitions, the confidence to take risks, and the opportunity to build communities around causes she cares about.
“I am grateful to have grown up in a country that has given me the freedom to dream big, the confidence to pursue those dreams, and the opportunity to contribute to a community I care deeply about,” she said.
For Khan, the UAE is not simply where she lives. It is where she grew up, built her career, formed lifelong relationships, and found her purpose.
Her story reflects the experience of many long-term expatriates who arrived decades ago, built their lives alongside the nation’s development, and today proudly consider the UAE home.
