Your Gmail inbox is about to change in a noticeable way. At Google I/O in May 2023, Sundar Pichai first introduced “Help Me Write.” Now, Google is expanding that vision with a broader rollout of Gemini AI tools inside Gmail.
Together, these updates aim to reduce inbox overload and make everyday email tasks faster and easier to manage.
A smarter inbox experience
At the centre of the update is AI Inbox, a new Gmail view designed to highlight what matters most.
Instead of a single, crowded list of emails, users will see two structured sections:
- Priorities
Surfaces urgent emails, key conversations, and time-sensitive messages. - Catch me up
Summarises lower-priority updates such as bookings, deliveries, and order confirmations.
Initially, AI Inbox will roll out to users in Google’s Trusted Tester programme. Wider access is expected once testing and feedback are complete.
Gemini AI features are available to all users
In addition to AI Inbox, Google is rolling out several Gemini-powered features to all Gmail users across the web, iOS, and Android.
Smarter suggested replies
Smart Replies are becoming more personalised. Gemini AI now considers conversation context and adapts suggestions to better match a user’s writing tone, reducing the need for edits.
AI thread summaries
Long email chains are easier to manage with AI Overviews, which summarise discussions and highlight key points without requiring users to open every message.
Help Me Write
This tool allows users to generate full emails from short prompts. It is designed to help with everything from professional requests to sensitive replies, saving time and effort.
Advanced tools for Google One subscribers
Users on Google One Ultra and Pro plans will receive additional AI-powered features.
AI search summaries
Instead of scrolling through search results, users can ask Gmail questions in plain language. Gemini AI then delivers a short, clear summary of relevant emails.
Proofread assistance
The Proofread feature offers quick fixes for grammar, clarity, and sentence structure. It works quietly in the background, helping users send cleaner, more polished emails.
These premium features will launch first in the US and in English, with broader rollout planned later.
Why this update matters
Gmail is evolving beyond email into an AI-driven productivity tool.
At the same time, competition across the tech industry is intensifying. Microsoft continues to expand Copilot, while OpenAI is developing AI-first browsing experiences. The direction is clear. Artificial intelligence is becoming embedded in everyday digital tools.
By integrating Gemini AI directly into Gmail, Google is positioning its most-used service to stay relevant in that shift.
What comes next
As testing progresses, Google plans to refine AI Inbox and expand Gemini features to more regions and languages. Over time, Gmail is expected to become more adaptive, organised, and responsive to individual work patterns.
For now, the message is straightforward.
The intelligent inbox is no longer experimental. It has arrived.
And for millions of users, managing email may soon feel significantly lighter than before.
