Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has launched the Riyadh Digital District, a new technology hub aimed at attracting global companies, entrepreneurs and specialised technology talent while strengthening the capital’s position in the digital economy.
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) announced the initiative on Thursday, saying the district aims to help Riyadh become one of the world’s top 10 technology districts.
The project is also part of Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 strategy to diversify the economy and build new sources of growth beyond oil.
Six technology sectors in focus
The Riyadh Digital District will concentrate on six technology fields:
- Artificial intelligence and big data
- Cybersecurity
- Computing and cloud services
- Internet of Things
- Blockchain technologies
- Robotics and unmanned aerial systems
The focus areas reflect Saudi Arabia’s push to build capabilities in technologies expected to shape businesses, government services and infrastructure in the coming years.
Ibrahim bin Mohammad Al Sultan, Minister of State, cabinet member and CEO of the RCRC, said the initiative is intended to establish Riyadh as a global destination for technology companies, talent and digital entrepreneurship.
He said the project reflects the country’s leadership commitment to developing future-oriented sectors and supports the objectives of Vision 2030.
A technology ecosystem for Riyadh
The district is being positioned as more than a collection of office spaces.
The RCRC plans to develop an integrated business ecosystem where technology companies, investors, entrepreneurs and specialised professionals can operate in proximity.
Global and regional technology companies, as well as startups, will be encouraged to establish operations in the district and use Riyadh as a base for expansion across the Middle East and North Africa.
The district will provide dedicated workspaces and opportunities for technology companies to connect with government agencies, private-sector organisations and professional communities.
Attracting global technology talent
A major objective of the project is to bring specialised workers and digital skills into Riyadh.
The district is expected to support technology teams, create long-term employment and encourage investment in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and robotics.
Regular meetings and public events will bring together founders, engineers, researchers and investors, helping build a stronger technology community around the district.
For Saudi Arabia, the broader ambition is clear. Riyadh is not simply trying to attract technology companies to the country. It is seeking to build an environment where companies can establish teams, develop digital capabilities and use the Saudi capital as a launchpad for the wider region.
The Riyadh Digital District therefore forms part of the Kingdom’s larger effort to turn Vision 2030 into a technology-led economic transformation.
