New security technology at Dubai Airport is expected to reduce wait times and make checks for laptops and liquids faster for travellers.
Dubai: Passengers flying from Dubai International Airport (DXB) could soon spend less time at security checkpoints as the airport rolls out new-generation scanners designed to screen hand luggage without requiring travellers to remove laptops, liquids and other items.
The technology upgrade is part of Dubai Airports’ wider effort to make security checks faster while handling growing passenger numbers without relying solely on new airport infrastructure.
What will change at Dubai Airport security?
The biggest change for passengers is straightforward.
Where the new scanners are operational, travellers will be able to leave laptops, liquids and other items inside their hand luggage during security screening.
The scanners are designed to provide a more detailed view of baggage contents, reducing the need for passengers to unpack and repack their belongings at the checkpoint.
Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said new security machines are already being installed across DXB as part of an ongoing replacement programme.
“Some of the machines are already in,” Griffiths said, adding that the airport is gradually replacing older technology so passengers can eventually have a more consistent experience across the airport.
Where is the new technology being installed?
The rollout is taking place across different parts of DXB rather than at a single security checkpoint.
The airport is carrying out refurbishment work in Terminal 1 and other areas, alongside the installation of additional security lanes and upgraded screening equipment.
Work is also taking place at Concourse B, including refurbishment of the Hammerhead remote terminal.
The latest rollout follows trials that Dubai Airports previously described as successful, with the newer screening technology delivering faster and more reliable baggage checks.
Why does DXB need faster security checks?
For one of the world’s busiest international airports, even small improvements in processing times can make a significant difference.
Dubai Airports has been trying to increase the efficiency of its existing infrastructure as passenger traffic continues to grow.
Griffiths previously said DXB had grown significantly over the past decade without major additional infrastructure being delivered, making technology and operational efficiency increasingly important to the airport’s expansion strategy.
Faster security screening can help the airport handle more passengers while reducing pressure on checkpoints and improving the overall journey.
Dubai Airport aims to remove more airport ‘friction’
The new scanners are part of a broader push to make airport processes less intrusive.
Griffiths has described a future where passengers no longer need to routinely remove belts, shoes, laptops and other belongings during security checks.
The airport is also looking at improvements to other parts of the passenger journey, including immigration and automated processing.
The long-term objective is to reduce queues and unnecessary steps, allowing travellers to move through DXB more seamlessly.
For passengers, the practical benefit is simple. Less unpacking at security, fewer interruptions and potentially shorter waits before reaching the departure area.
The rollout is gradual, however, so passengers should still follow the instructions displayed at the security checkpoint they are using.
