Dubai: Dubai Municipality has become the first government entity in the world to receive international certification under ISO 24566, a global standard for managing stormwater services in response to climate change.
The certification recognises the Municipality’s integrated approach to assessing climate risks and planning, designing, operating and maintaining stormwater drainage systems.
The achievement reflects Dubai’s broader focus on developing resilient infrastructure capable of responding to changing weather conditions, protecting communities and maintaining essential services.
Climate-ready drainage systems
Dubai Municipality has developed an integrated framework to assess climate-related changes and the risks they could pose to stormwater drainage networks.
The framework is designed to help drainage systems respond to both current challenges and future climate conditions through proactive planning and evidence-based decision-making.
It covers the planning, design, operation and maintenance of drainage infrastructure, intending to keep services efficient and reliable as weather patterns change.
Eng. Adel Mohammed Al Marzouqi, CEO of the Waste and Sewerage Agency at Dubai Municipality, said the certification reflects the technical and organisational maturity of the emirate’s drainage infrastructure.
“This achievement translates our wise leadership’s vision into resilient infrastructure that reinforces Dubai’s position as a sustainable and future-ready city.”
Al Marzouqi added that implementing ISO 24566 would strengthen the Municipality’s operational and field capabilities through systematic methods for addressing climate change impacts.
