Dubai’s first approved vertiport, located near Dubai International Airport, is expected to serve up to 170,000 passengers and support future air taxi operations.
World’s first certified commercial vertiport clears a major milestone for Dubai’s air taxi network.
Dubai has taken a significant step towards launching commercial air taxi services after the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) approved the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The newly certified facility, known as VDX, is located near Dubai International Airport and will serve as the central hub of Dubai’s planned air taxi network. Developed by Skyports Infrastructure in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the vertiport marks a major milestone in the emirate’s ambition to build a safe and sustainable urban air mobility system.
The certification establishes the regulatory foundation for future commercial operations and strengthens Dubai’s position as a global leader in advanced transportation.
VDX designed to handle up to 170,000 passengers annually
The four-storey VDX vertiport covers approximately 3,100 square metres and has been designed specifically to support electric air taxi operations.
The facility includes two dedicated take-off and landing pads, rapid charging infrastructure for electric aircraft, and passenger facilities capable of supporting high-volume operations.
Once commercial services begin, the vertiport is expected to accommodate up to 170,000 passengers annually, providing fast connections to key locations in Dubai.
Regulatory approval marks a global first
The GCAA granted certification after conducting a comprehensive review of the facility’s infrastructure, operational procedures, physical characteristics, safety management systems, emergency preparedness, and compliance with aviation regulations.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, described the certification as a landmark achievement for both the UAE and the global aviation industry.
He said the approval reflects the country’s commitment to innovation while maintaining the highest international safety standards and demonstrates the strength of the UAE’s regulatory framework for emerging aviation technologies.
The certification also provides an important layer of public confidence as Dubai prepares to introduce commercial passenger air taxi services.
Dubai’s air taxi network continues to expand.
VDX will become the first operational hub within Dubai’s wider air taxi network, with three additional vertiports currently under development across the city.
According to Skyports Infrastructure, construction of the broader network is progressing, bringing Dubai closer to introducing a fully integrated urban air mobility system.
Duncan Walker, Chief Executive Officer of Skyports Infrastructure, said the certification moves the project significantly closer to commercial operations. He added that the growing network will support a new generation of safe, efficient, and sustainable urban transport.
A new chapter in urban transportation
Dubai has invested heavily in advanced mobility technologies as part of its long-term strategy to modernise transportation and reduce congestion.
The approval of the world’s first certified commercial vertiport represents more than a regulatory milestone. It establishes the infrastructure needed to support electric air taxi operations at scale and creates a blueprint for future urban aviation projects worldwide.
As construction continues on the remaining vertiports and commercial services near launch, Dubai is positioning itself at the forefront of next-generation air mobility and redefining how people may travel across cities in the years ahead.
