Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed retirement speculation and explained his departure from Portugal’s camp, accusing Jorge Jesus of breaking his word.
Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his controversial departure from Portugal’s national team camp, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word while admitting he was wrong to leave his teammates.
The 41-year-old forward said he remained committed to Portugal and would be available for selection after serving any disciplinary punishment, provided he was physically fit and performing for his club. His statement, released on Tuesday, offered his account of the dispute that began after Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway. <Cite refs={[“turn416890search0″,”turn416890search1”]}/>
What Happened Between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus?
According to Ronaldo, Jesus initially proposed that he sit out Portugal’s matches against Norway and Denmark to manage his fitness. Ronaldo rejected the plan, arguing that remaining behind while his teammates travelled would send the wrong message from the national team captain.
He said Jesus accepted his reasoning but later asked whether he could play for around 30 minutes against Norway. Ronaldo agreed and warmed up from half-time onwards, only to remain on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 victory.
Ronaldo described the incident as a breach of trust. He also acknowledged that he made a mistake by failing to approach supporters after the match and apologised to those who had travelled to watch Portugal.
Ronaldo Says Jesus Failed to Honour a Second Agreement
Ronaldo said he met Jesus around 48 hours later, with Al Nassr sporting director Simao Coutinho also present. According to the forward, they agreed that Jesus would clarify the situation during his next press conference and explain that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time.
Ronaldo said an eight-point document was prepared ahead of the press conference. It reportedly covered his professionalism, his respect for the coach’s decisions and Jesus’s handling of the Norway match.
One point referred to the coach’s private comparison of Ronaldo’s stature with football legends Pele and Diego Maradona. Ronaldo expected Jesus to acknowledge publicly that asking a player of that standing to warm up without bringing him on had been a mistake.
However, Ronaldo said the press conference did not reflect what they had discussed privately. He accused Jesus of breaking his word for a second time and said that prompted his decision to leave the training camp before the Denmark match. <Cite refs={[“turn416890search0″,”turn416890search1”]}/>
Jesus has disputed Ronaldo’s account, denying that he made such an agreement. The Portuguese Football Federation had not immediately commented on Ronaldo’s statement. <Cite refs={[“turn416890search0”]}/>
Ronaldo Accepts Responsibility for Leaving Portugal’s Camp
Although Ronaldo criticised the coach, he also accepted responsibility for his own actions.
He apologised to his teammates and the Portuguese public for leaving the camp, adding that his position as captain made his conduct more serious. He said the Portuguese Football Federation should assess his actions and impose any appropriate punishment.
Ronaldo stressed that being captain should not place him above the rules that apply to the rest of the squad.
His response marked a shift from his initial decision to leave without publicly explaining the circumstances. He had previously promised to reveal his reasons at a later stage.
Is Cristiano Ronaldo Retiring From International Football?
Ronaldo made it clear that he has not retired from Portugal duty and is not limiting his future involvement to a farewell appearance.
He said that once he has served any suspension, he hopes to remain available for selection if he is fit, playing regularly for Al Nassr and scoring goals.
The forward also recalled his decision to remain with Portugal for a match after learning of his father’s death, describing it as an example of what representing his country has meant to him.
The dispute has raised questions about Ronaldo’s relationship with Jesus, but the coach has also indicated that the door remains open for the forward’s return. Following Portugal’s win over Norway on October 4, Jesus said Ronaldo could return if he wanted to resume playing for the national team. <Cite refs={[“turn416890search4″,”turn416890search11”]}/>
For now, Ronaldo’s international future remains open. He has acknowledged that leaving the camp was a mistake, accepted the possibility of punishment, and reaffirmed his desire to compete for Portugal.
The immediate question is whether the player and coach can resolve their disagreement before Portugal’s next international fixtures, and whether either will offer further clarification about the conversations that led to the walkout.
