UAE Faces Weeks of Unstable Spring Weather Until Early May

Unstable weather is expected to continue through early May.

As part of this seasonal shift, the United Arab Emirates is set to experience recurring periods of instability linked to a phase locally known as “Sarayat” or “Marawih.”

According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, this phase typically occurs between mid-March and early May and brings sudden and repeated atmospheric fluctuations.

Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Expected

During this period, weather systems can develop rapidly, triggering thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and fast-forming convective clouds. As a result, conditions can intensify within short timeframes, making them difficult to predict.

In addition, the UAE may be influenced by a broader regional cloud belt extending from central and eastern Africa across the Arabian Peninsula and into the Arabian Gulf. This pattern can bring rain accompanied by lightning and thunder across multiple areas.

Recent Activity Signals Active Season

Already, the effects of this seasonal pattern have begun to appear. Towards the end of March, an active low-pressure system brought scattered cloud cover, rainfall and occasional thunderstorms across parts of the United Arab Emirates and the wider Gulf region.

While such systems are typical during this period, their intensity can vary significantly depending on atmospheric conditions.

Lessons From Recent Years

Looking back, recent spring seasons have shown how intense these weather patterns can become. For instance, in March and April 2024, deep low-pressure systems triggered widespread thunderstorms, strong winds and record-breaking rainfall in several areas, with precipitation exceeding 200 mm in some locations.

Taken together, these events highlight the potential severity of spring weather fluctuations during the Sarayat period.

What to Expect in the Coming Weeks

The current outlook suggests continued variability in weather conditions, with alternating periods of cloud cover, rainfall, and clearer skies.

While not every system will be severe, the pattern of rapid development and localized intensity remains a defining feature of this season.

Residents can expect intermittent weather changes over the coming weeks, reflecting the transitional nature of spring in the region.
