In a major and positive development for worshippers across the country, the UAE has announced a nationwide change to Friday prayer timings starting January 2026. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat confirmed that all mosques in the UAE will hold Jumuah prayers at 12:45pm, around 30 minutes earlier than the current standard time.

The new schedule will officially take effect from Friday, January 2, 2026, and not the immediately upcoming Friday, as clarified by the authority in a public notice shared on its Friday sermon archive platform.

Official Announcement to Worshippers

In its message, the authority stated:

“O worshippers: The General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat announces that starting from Friday, January 2, 2026, not the upcoming Friday, the Friday sermon and prayer will be held at 12:45 PM. Therefore, O worshippers, make sure to perform it at its specified time to ensure reward and blessings.”

Worshippers have been urged to arrive early to ensure they can perform the prayer on time and benefit fully from the spiritual significance of Jumuah.

Why the Timing Is Changing

The current Friday prayer time of 1:15pm was standardised in 2022 after the UAE introduced its new workweek system. The country shifted its official weekend from Friday–Saturday to Saturday–Sunday, with public sector employees working half-days on Fridays to enable attendance at congregational prayers.

Since then, several private companies have also adopted flexible Friday schedules, including work-from-home options, and allowed employees to take Friday afternoons off provided they compensate the hours during the rest of the week.

The new 12:45pm timing aligns better with evolving work patterns while ensuring that worshippers can attend prayers without workday disruptions.

A Step Towards Comfort and Well-being

The decision also reflects the UAE’s ongoing efforts to make religious practices more accessible and comfortable. Last summer, authorities instructed imams nationwide to limit Friday sermons and prayers to 10 minutes to protect worshippers from extreme heat during peak summer months.

By adjusting prayer timings earlier in the day, officials aim to further enhance convenience, safety, and attendance, especially for workers and elderly worshippers.

Friday: The Holiest Day in Islam

Friday holds special spiritual importance in Islam. Mosques across the UAE host Jumuah prayers, which bring communities together for worship, reflection, and unity. Any change to Friday prayer schedules carries deep significance, making this announcement particularly impactful for millions of residents.

What Worshippers Should Do Now

  • Mark your calendar: The new timing begins January 2, 2026.
  • Arrive early: Mosques are expected to begin sermons before 12:45pm.
  • Inform family and colleagues: Especially those who plan work breaks around prayer times.

Looking Ahead

This strategic and thoughtful update reflects the UAE’s commitment to balancing modern work-life structures with religious and cultural values. As the nation continues to evolve, such changes ensure that faith remains seamlessly integrated into daily life, not as a challenge, but as a strength.

With this new schedule, worshippers can look forward to a smoother, more accessible Friday prayer experience in 2026 and beyond.
