Jeddah and Dammam airports remain operational after aerial attacks, but flights are facing delays and cancellations as the US introduces new restrictions for airport staff.
The United States has introduced new travel restrictions for its government employees in Saudi Arabia following recent aerial attacks, while warning American citizens of possible further strikes and continued flight disruptions.
In a security alert issued on October 13, the US Mission in Saudi Arabia said American government employees must obtain special authorisation from the Chief of Mission before using any airport in the Kingdom.
The advisory also confirmed that Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation had extended the suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh until October 17.
King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam remain operational, although some flights continue to face delays and cancellations.
“US citizens should be aware of potential attacks on airports, flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions,” the mission warned.
It urged Americans travelling through Saudi airports to exercise extreme caution and check their flight status directly with airlines and airport authorities.
US Advises Travellers to Consider Alternative Transport
With air travel affected by the security situation, the US Mission has advised travellers to consider road and rail transport where appropriate.
The advisory directs passengers to Saudi Arabia Railways, SAT Transportation and SAPTCO for information about available services.
International airports in neighbouring Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, Qatar and the UAE remain operational, according to the notice. However, travellers have been advised to confirm airport status and travel arrangements directly with the relevant authorities before departure.
The mission’s guidance comes as the suspension at Riyadh airport and disruptions on other routes continue to affect regional travel.
Saudi Arabia Warns Against Sharing Images of Attacks
The US security alert also reiterated a warning from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior against filming, publishing, or sharing information about missile and drone interceptions or the locations where projectiles have struck.
The ministry has cautioned that such activities could result in legal consequences.
According to the US Mission, American citizens have previously been detained for violating these restrictions, including taking photographs of government buildings, airports and sites where projectiles had fallen.
The mission reminded US citizens that visitors and residents must comply with Saudi Arabian laws while in the Kingdom.
Travellers Need to Check Official Updates
The US advisory highlights the continuing security and travel concerns following the aerial attacks.
Passengers planning journeys through Saudi Arabia should confirm flight schedules with their airlines, review alternative transport options, and monitor official announcements for changes to airport operations.
Travellers should also follow local laws governing photography and the sharing of information about security incidents.
