Marvel has announced several X-Men cast members, but Wolverine, Magneto, and three blue-skinned mutants have yet to be cast.
Marvel has finally revealed the first major members of its new X-Men team, but Kevin Feige made it clear that the lineup shown at D23 is not the complete roster.
The announcement confirmed seven actors for Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men film, giving fans a first look at the next generation of mutants joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, Kit Connor will portray Cyclops, Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott will play Professor X, Inde Navarrette will play Rogue, and Maya Boyd will portray Storm. Adam Driver, meanwhile, will appear as the villain Mister Sinister.
Directed by Jake Schreier, the film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on May 5, 2028. Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are working on the screenplay.
But seven characters are hardly enough to represent the enormous X-Men mythology. Feige’s comments at D23 indicated that additional casting announcements are still to come, leaving some of the franchise’s most recognisable mutants without confirmed actors.
That includes Wolverine and Magneto, two characters who have been central to almost every major live-action version of the X-Men.
Here is what is confirmed, what remains unknown, and where some of the biggest gaps in the new roster currently stand.
The X-Men characters Marvel has confirmed
The new team already has a strong foundation.
Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey, one of the most powerful telepaths and telekinetics in Marvel’s mutant mythology. Kit Connor will play Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, who traditionally serves as one of the X-Men’s principal field leaders.
Samara Weaving has been cast as Emma Frost, while Maya Boyd will play Storm and Inde Navarrette will portray Rogue.
Christopher Abbott is the new Charles Xavier, replacing Patrick Stewart as Professor X in this new iteration of the team.
Adam Driver’s casting is perhaps the most unexpected. Marvel initially used his announcement to make fans think he might be playing Magneto, before revealing that he will instead portray Mister Sinister, the geneticist and longtime X-Men villain Nathaniel Essex.
The casting gives Marvel a relatively young central team while introducing a villain who has not previously appeared in a live-action X-Men film.
Wolverine remains the biggest question.
The most obvious omission is Wolverine.
No actor has been officially announced for the role in Marvel’s new X-Men film, and there is currently no confirmation that Logan will even appear in the first movie.
That absence is particularly noticeable because Wolverine has arguably become the most commercially recognisable member of the X-Men franchise, largely because of Hugh Jackman’s two-decade association with the character.
Jackman is not simply disappearing from the MCU, either. He is expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, alongside several other actors from the previous X-Men films. That makes the transition more complicated. Marvel could choose to introduce a completely new Wolverine after the multiverse storyline has run its course, or it could delay Logan’s introduction until a later X-Men film.
There have also been persistent online rumours linking Henry Cavill to a major mutant role, with Wolverine being the character most frequently mentioned by fans. There is, however, no official confirmation from Marvel that Cavill has been cast.
For now, Wolverine remains exactly what the studio appears to want him to be: a mystery.
Magneto is missing too
Magneto is the other enormous gap.
The character has been inseparable from the X-Men mythology since the original comics, where his ideological conflict with Charles Xavier became one of the franchise’s defining relationships.
Adam Driver’s D23 reveal briefly appeared to tease Magneto before the actor revealed that he was actually playing Mister Sinister. That made the absence of Magneto even more conspicuous.
Marvel has not announced an actor for the role.
There is another reason the studio may be taking its time. Ian McKellen is returning as Magneto in Avengers: Doomsday, alongside several other legacy X-Men actors. Patrick Stewart is also returning as Professor X, while James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming are expected to reprise Cyclops, Mystique and Nightcrawler respectively.
That allows Marvel to use the older generation in Doomsday and potentially Secret Wars before fully establishing its new mutant universe.
Beast, Nightcrawler and Mystique are still open.
Three other familiar names remain notably absent: Beast, Nightcrawler and Mystique.
Beast has already appeared in the MCU through Kelsey Grammer’s return as the character in The Marvels. Grammer is also among the legacy X-Men actors returning for Avengers: Doomsday.
That could explain why Marvel has not rushed to announce a new version of Hank McCoy.
Nightcrawler presents a similar situation. Alan Cumming is returning as the character in Avengers: Doomsday, while Rebecca Romijn is coming back as Mystique. Whether either character will subsequently be recast for the new X-Men team remains unclear.
There have been casting rumours around Beast, but none has been officially confirmed. As with Wolverine and Magneto, fans should treat reports about possible actors as speculation until Marvel makes an announcement.
What about Kitty Pryde, Iceman and Gambit?
The remaining gaps become even larger once the roster moves beyond the most famous characters.
Kitty Pryde has been a major member of the X-Men in the comics and has appeared in previous films, but she has never received the same prominence as characters such as Wolverine, Professor X or Magneto.
Iceman is another familiar name who has yet to appear in Marvel’s confirmed lineup.
Gambit is a particularly complicated case.
Channing Tatum’s version of Gambit became part of the wider MCU conversation after Deadpool & Wolverine, and Tatum is expected to return in Avengers: Doomsday.
That leaves open the possibility that Marvel could carry that version forward, although there has been no announcement confirming Gambit’s place in the new X-Men film.
Other traditional members of the team, including Angel and Jubilee, also remain unconfirmed.
Jubilee has an interesting history with the franchise. Lana Condor, who played the character in X-Men: Apocalypse, recently said she would like another opportunity to play Jubilee and confirmed that she has spoken with people connected to Marvel about a possible return. She has not been cast in the new film.
Psylocke is another character without a confirmed place in the film. Actress Agnez Mo has publicly expressed interest in playing the role, but that is not the same as being in talks or being cast.
Why is Marvel building such a young team?
One of the clearest patterns in the confirmed casting is the age of the new generation.
Sink, Connor, Boyd and Navarrette are significantly younger than many of the actors who led the original X-Men films. That suggests Marvel may be building a team that can remain at the centre of the MCU for several years rather than relying immediately on established A-list stars.
It also gives the studio room to develop relationships between characters over multiple films.
Jean Grey and Cyclops, for example, have one of the most important relationships in X-Men history. Their connection has been central to the comics for decades, and Sink has already spoken about the importance of Jean and Scott’s relationship in the new films.
The decision also resembles Marvel’s broader approach to introducing younger versions of major characters rather than attempting to reproduce the previous Fox-era films.
The old X-Men are not disappearing yet.
The new cast should not be viewed as an immediate replacement for everything that came before.
Marvel is using Avengers: Doomsday as a bridge between its current MCU and the earlier Fox X-Men universe. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer are among the returning actors, while Channing Tatum is also returning as Gambit.
That creates an unusual situation in which audiences could see two generations of X-Men characters existing around the same period.
The multiverse gives Marvel plenty of flexibility, but it also means the studio has to carefully explain how the legacy characters connect to the new generation.
More casting is almost certainly coming.
For now, Marvel has revealed enough of the new team to establish its direction without giving away the entire roster.
Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue, Emma Frost and Professor X form the confirmed heroic core, while Mister Sinister gives the film its first announced major antagonist.
But Wolverine and Magneto remain the two biggest unanswered questions. Beast, Nightcrawler and Mystique are also unresolved, while characters such as Kitty Pryde, Iceman, Gambit, Jubilee, Angel and Psylocke could potentially expand the roster further.
The important distinction is between what Marvel has actually announced and what the internet believes is coming next. Several actors have been linked to various roles over the past year, but most of those reports remain unconfirmed.
With X-Men not scheduled to arrive until May 5, 2028, Marvel still has considerable time to fill the remaining roles.
For now, the new X-Men are only partially assembled.
Wolverine is missing. Magneto is missing. Beast, Nightcrawler, and Mystique remain unresolved.
And that may be exactly how Marvel wants it.
