A year of intensive training has prepared a new generation of young Emirati musicians for a historic debut at one of the world’s most prestigious concert halls.
Dubai: Just one year ago, many of the students now representing the UAE on the international stage were learning the fundamentals of playing instruments such as the violin, cello, and piano. This month, several of those young musicians will take the stage at Vienna’s legendary Musikverein, becoming part of the first UAE-based orchestra ever to perform at the iconic venue.
The milestone marks the culmination of the inaugural Emirati Music Education Program, an initiative launched by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority in partnership with the National Youth Orchestra Dubai (NYO Dubai). Designed to nurture homegrown musical talent, the program aims to create new pathways for Emirati artists while strengthening the country’s growing cultural and creative industries.
A Year of Intensive Musical Training
Over the course of a full academic year, the program’s first cohort of 20 Emirati students completed approximately 1,850 hours of collective training, averaging more than 90 hours of instruction per participant. Their education combined orchestral rehearsals, ensemble performances, individual instrumental coaching, and music theory classes under the guidance of five internationally recognized musicians and educators specializing in strings, piano, woodwinds, and vocal performance.
The intensive curriculum was created to develop not only technical ability but also the discipline, collaboration, and confidence required to perform on some of the world’s most respected stages.
Building the Next Generation of Emirati Talent
Reflecting on the program’s first year, Amira Fouad, Executive Director and Artistic Director of NYO Dubai, described the students’ transformation as deeply inspiring.
She said watching the young Emirati musicians grow through months of dedicated training demonstrated the exceptional talent emerging within the UAE. According to Fouad, the program represents the beginning of a long-term journey rather than its conclusion, laying the foundation for future generations of Emirati performers.
Dubai Culture also views the initiative as an important investment in the country’s artistic future.
Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, said the program provides a valuable platform for developing Emirati musicians while supporting the UAE’s broader vision of building a globally competitive music sector.
Historic Vienna Debut Awaits
That vision will soon take center stage in Austria.
Graduates from the program will join the National Youth Orchestra Dubai on a concert tour across Vienna, performing at three of the city’s most celebrated venues: the Musikverein’s Golden Hall, the Wiener Konzerthaus, and the ORF RadioKulturhaus. The performances will mark the first time a UAE-based orchestra has appeared at any of these internationally renowned concert halls.
The tour will also feature the world premiere of Threads of Light, a new orchestral composition by acclaimed Emirati composer Ihab Darwish, further highlighting the UAE’s growing contribution to the global classical music landscape.
A Milestone for the UAE’s Cultural Vision
From learning their first notes in Dubai classrooms to performing on one of classical music’s grandest stages, the students’ journey reflects the country’s increasing investment in nurturing creative talent and showcasing Emirati culture on the world stage.
Their Vienna performance represents more than an international debut. It marks an important step in establishing the UAE as a growing center for arts, music, and cultural excellence while inspiring future generations of Emirati musicians to pursue careers on the global stage.
