Moving to a new country often promises fresh opportunities, but for many expatriates, the hardest part is not finding a job or a home. It is finding people who make the new place feel like home.
That was the experience of Egyptian expat Ahmed Youssef when he moved to Dubai during the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as a personal search for friendship eventually grew into ChillMe, a community initiative that has connected thousands of residents across the UAE.
Starting Over During the Pandemic
Ahmed Youssef relocated to the UAE in 2021 after his fiancée, Sarah Kamal, accepted a job opportunity in Dubai a year earlier. The couple, who later married and became business partners, planned to build their future together in the Emirates.
But the timing made settling in particularly difficult.
COVID-19 restrictions limited social gatherings, making it challenging to meet new people or build meaningful relationships.
“I realised that many people around us were experiencing the same feelings of loneliness and disconnection,” Youssef said.
The move also brought financial challenges. Unable to transfer to his employer’s UAE office, Youssef spent his first six months in Dubai earning a salary in Egyptian currency while living in one of the region’s most expensive cities.
“It was a difficult period that required careful planning, resilience and a lot of patience,” he recalled.
Turning Loneliness Into an Opportunity
As Ahmed and Sarah slowly built their own social circle, they noticed a common pattern.
Many newcomers were not just looking for places to visit. They were searching for genuine friendships and a sense of belonging.
That observation inspired the creation of ChillMe, a community platform designed to bring strangers together through social events, activities, and shared experiences.
Rather than focusing solely on entertainment, the initiative aims to help residents build lasting relationships in a city where people from more than 200 nationalities live and work together.
For Youssef, the idea came from a simple belief that moving to a new country becomes much easier when you have people to share the journey with.
Why the UAE Made It Possible
Youssef believes the UAE provided the right environment to transform his idea into a successful community initiative.
Although he had previously built a community in Egypt, expanding it proved far more difficult because of regulatory and business challenges.
In the UAE, he found a supportive ecosystem with clear regulations, modern infrastructure and an environment that encourages entrepreneurship.
“The UAE’s strong infrastructure, well-defined regulations, and consistently high-quality services played a significant role in my journey,” he said.
Living alongside people from diverse cultures also reshaped his understanding of community.
“The country’s values are reflected in everyday life. They find a system that enables them to live together, integrate and complement one another.”
Building Connections Across the UAE
Since launching ChillMe, the initiative has grown into one of the UAE’s active social communities.
Its impact includes:
- More than 190 community events organised.
- Over 1,190 participants attending activities.
- Support for more than 110 small and medium-sized businesses by introducing new customers.
- Opportunities for over 12 local artists, facilitators and creative professionals to showcase their talents and earn additional income.
For Youssef, however, success is measured less by attendance figures and more by the personal stories that emerge.
“Success is not measured only by the number of events we organise but by the positive impact we create for people, local businesses and talented individuals within the community,” he said.
Helping Expats Feel at Home
Millions of expatriates arrive in the UAE each year hoping to build a better future. While their careers often progress quickly, finding genuine friendships can take much longer.
Youssef’s own experience showed him that creating opportunities for people to connect can make that transition easier.
His message to newcomers reflects the values that guided his own journey.
“The UAE is a land of dreams and opportunities. All you need is to open your heart, embrace change, and apply five essential values in everything you do: patience, respect, humility, passion and integrity.”
Building More Than a Community
Ahmed Youssef’s story is ultimately about more than organising social events.
It demonstrates how a personal struggle can become an opportunity to solve a challenge faced by thousands of others.
By creating spaces where strangers become friends, he has helped many residents discover that belonging is not something people find after moving abroad. It is something they build together through shared experiences, meaningful conversations, and genuine human connection.
