16-Year-Old Dubai Teen Develops Low-Cost Hydration Tablets for Heat

Jash Jain, 16, developed an affordable hydration tablet designed to help people who work outdoors stay hydrated in hot weather.

When a delivery rider arrived at his home looking exhausted, 16-year-old Jash Jain noticed something that stayed with him.

The man had already been drinking water, yet he still felt severely dehydrated.

Jain, a student at Dubai International Academy, invited the rider, Ali, to sit down and offered him food and water. Ali declined the water, explaining that he had already consumed two bottles and still felt little relief from the exhaustion brought on by the heat.

The encounter led Jain to a question that would eventually become a months-long project: what happens when people working outdoors need more than water to cope with extreme heat?

That question became the starting point for Thirst-E, an affordable dissolvable hydration tablet that Jain developed with outdoor workers in mind.

A problem Jain wanted to understand

Rather than immediately designing a product, Jain began by speaking to the people most likely to use it.

He interviewed 50 delivery riders about the physical demands of their jobs, the hydration challenges they experienced, and the support available to them during long working days.

Their responses shaped the development of Thirst-E and helped Jain understand that convenience and affordability were just as important as the formulation itself.

“The role of the delivery riders who ignited my curiosity shouldn’t be understated,” Jain said. “A big part of Thirst-E comes from directly speaking to the target audience.”

Jain also examined existing hydration products. He found that sports drinks could become expensive for frequent use, while conventional tablets sold through pharmacies did not always fit the needs of workers who spend much of their day travelling between locations.

The idea was therefore to create something compact, simple to use and inexpensive enough to be practical for people working outdoors.

What is inside Thirst-E?

Each Thirst-E tablet contains 274mg of sodium, 20mg of magnesium, 40mg of vitamin C and 10mg of zinc, according to the product information supplied by Jain.

The tablet is designed to dissolve in water, allowing users to carry it easily and prepare a drink during the working day.

Jain researched the ingredients before developing the formulation, consulting a doctor in his family as well as someone with experience in the hydration-supplement industry.

The final formulation was produced by an Indian white-label manufacturer that already manufactures similar tablet products for the pharmacy market.

The process also forced Jain to confront questions beyond the product itself.

When a teacher asked him whether the formulation was suitable for pregnant women, he realised there were areas where he needed additional verification.

“I didn’t know, so I contacted the manufacturer and made sure it was,” he said.

From an idea to an approved product

Turning the concept into something that could actually be sold proved to be one of the more complicated parts of the project.

The team conducted early testing on a small scale within its own community while staying in contact with the manufacturer about the product’s suitability and use.

The formulation was tested in India and received a free-sale certificate from the Indian government.

Bringing the product into the UAE required further regulatory work, including extensive exchanges on the legal and compliance requirements for its sale.

Thirst-E subsequently obtained the required Dubai Municipality certificate, allowing the product to be sold in Dubai.

For a teenager working on his first consumer product, the process provided an education that went well beyond the original science behind the tablet.

A pilot with more than 60 workers

Jain’s first significant pilot involved more than 60 employees from 6thStreet’s delivery and warehouse operations.

Fifteen participants completed a detailed feedback survey covering areas such as dehydration, flavour and ease of use.

Among those respondents, 67% selected ratings indicating significant daily dehydration, while 100% said the tablet was easy to use. Another 93% said they liked its taste, and 93% reported feeling more hydrated after taking it.

These results are based on Jain’s pilot feedback rather than an independently published clinical study, so they should be viewed as early user responses rather than evidence of a medically established treatment.

That distinction matters, particularly for a product positioned around hydration in extreme weather.

Jain’s objective is to develop a practical supplement for people working outdoors, not to suggest that a tablet can replace access to adequate fluids, rest, or appropriate workplace heat-safety measures.

The business idea behind the product

Jain is also thinking about how Thirst-E could reach the workers who inspired it.

As founder, he oversees product development, corporate discussions, pilot programmes, partnerships and feedback collection, with support from education consultancy UniHawk.

A five-member team is helping with the project’s website and social media presence.

The startup is also exploring a business-to-business model aimed at delivery and construction companies, with plans to offer the product in sachet form at around 50 fils each.

Discussions with Talabat over a possible delivery-rider pilot were ongoing at the time of the supplied report, although no partnership had been confirmed.

Jain has also proposed a “hydrate your rider” option for delivery platforms, under which customers could add 50 fils to an order to help fund a hydration tablet for the rider.

The concept could also work outside delivery services, with Jain considering direct distribution to gardeners, construction workers and other people whose jobs require them to spend long periods outdoors.

The question behind Thirst-E

What began with one exhausted delivery rider has given Jain a much broader view of the people who keep Dubai operating through its hottest months.

The project is still at an early stage. Its next challenge will be determining whether positive pilot feedback can translate into wider adoption, particularly among companies employing large outdoor workforces.

For Jain, however, the project has already answered an important question.

Extreme heat is not simply a weather issue for people who work outdoors. It is part of their working environment, and staying adequately hydrated can become a daily challenge.

Thirst-E is Jain’s attempt to address one small part of that problem through a product designed around portability and affordability.

The idea began with a simple observation at his front door, but it has since developed into something much larger: a young person’s attempt to ask who looks after the people working outside when the temperature climbs.
