How Medy Navani Built INSTINKT for Everyday Protection

Medy Navani built his career designing spaces through Design Haus Medy, focusing on how people live and interact within them. Over time, a gap became increasingly clear. While buildings, technologies, and urban systems have evolved rapidly, the tools individuals rely on during emergencies have remained largely unchanged.

This observation led to the creation of INSTINKT, a UAE-based venture focused on developing personal safety products designed for everyday environments rather than institutional use.

From Infrastructure to Individual Responsibility

Traditional safety systems are designed to manage risk at a structural level, including alarms, sprinklers, and fireproofing. These systems are essential, yet they primarily serve to contain incidents and create time. The question INSTINKT addresses is what individuals do within that window.

Navani’s approach reframes safety as a personal responsibility that complements existing infrastructure. Instead of relying solely on centralized systems, individuals are equipped with tools that can be immediately accessed and used in critical moments.

Designing for Accessibility and Use

INSTINKT’s first product, the EV1 Fire Escape Kit, reflects this philosophy. The kit includes a certified fire escape hood mask, an emergency whistle, and protective fire escape towels designed to reduce exposure to smoke and fumes.

Rather than being stored as institutional equipment, the product is designed to sit within everyday spaces such as bedrooms, hotel rooms, or work desks. This design decision aligns with the idea that accessibility determines response. Tools that are within reach are more likely to be used effectively.

Building Trust in a New Category

Launching a personal safety brand required more than product development. It required a shifting perception. Safety products are often associated with compliance or worst-case scenarios, which can create distance between the product and the user.

Navani chose to position INSTINKT through education and demonstration rather than fear-based messaging. By allowing users to interact with the product and understand its function, the brand builds credibility through experience rather than claims.

Early validation came through industry recognition, including being named an innovation champion at Intersec, reinforcing trust at a foundational stage.

Operational Discipline Behind the Product

The development process also highlighted the complexity of building within the safety category. Certification standards, regulatory requirements, and supply chain reliability introduce constraints that cannot be compromised.

As a new entrant, INSTINKT faced the challenge of establishing credibility with manufacturing partners while ensuring product quality met stringent standards. The decision to delay launch until supply chain reliability was secured reflects a long-term approach to brand trust.

A Shift in the Safety Market

Navani identifies a structural gap in the global safety market. Most manufacturers focus on institutional buyers, while individual consumers remain underserved.

INSTINKT positions itself within this gap, treating personal safety as a design and behavioral challenge rather than purely a technical one. The goal is to integrate safety into daily life in a way that feels natural rather than reactive.

Beyond Products to Resilience

The broader vision extends beyond a single product category. Navani frames safety as part of a larger conversation around resilience, where individuals are equipped not only to respond to emergencies but to do so effectively and independently.

In this context, INSTINKT represents an early step toward redefining how safety is perceived, moving from passive reliance on systems to active personal preparedness.
