The UAE safest airlines in 2026 have taken centre stage in the latest global safety rankings, with Etihad Airways named the world’s safest full-service airline. The list, released by AirlineRatings, assessed 320 airlines worldwide and highlighted how operational discipline and turbulence management now shape modern aviation safety.
This marks the first time a Gulf carrier has secured the top position, reinforcing the UAE’s growing reputation for consistently high safety standards.
“This is the first year a Gulf airline has ranked number one,” said Sharon Petersen, chief executive of AirlineRatings. She pointed to Etihad’s young fleet, cockpit safety upgrades, strong turbulence protocols, crash-free record, and the lowest incident rate per flight as key reasons behind the ranking.
Which full-service airlines lead in 2026
Etihad leads a closely packed group of global carriers, where the differences between rankings remain minimal.

Notably, Singapore Airlines returned to the list after missing out last year following a turbulence-related incident. Meanwhile, STARLUX and Fiji Airways entered the rankings for the first time.
Petersen noted that the margins between airlines are extremely narrow. Less than four points separate positions one through 14, while just 1.3 points divide the top six. In practice, this means the rankings reflect fine operational differences rather than major safety gaps.
Why turbulence management mattered more this year
In 2026, AirlineRatings placed greater weight on how airlines prevent and manage turbulence.
The evaluation rewarded carriers that participate in data-sharing programmes such as IATA’s Turbulence Aware, complete independent onboard safety audits, and maintain transparent incident reporting. Turbulence remains the leading cause of in-flight injuries, making preparedness a central factor in safety assessments.
As a result, airlines that invested in real-time data and cockpit decision support systems scored higher across the board.
Low-cost airlines raise the bar
The focus on safety extended beyond full-service carriers.
In the low-cost category, HK Express retained its top ranking for a second consecutive year. AirlineRatings cited its modern fleet, low incident rate, and strong audit performance.

Every airline featured reported minor incidents over the past two years, including tail strikes, engine shutdowns, and onboard fires. However, actual incident rates per flight remain extremely low, ranging from 0.002 to 0.09.
“Safety today depends on consistency, culture, and risk management across millions of flights,” Petersen said. “Small numerical differences should not be interpreted as meaningful safety gaps.”
