The United Arab Emirates has expressed its condolences and solidarity with Nepal following a tragic bus accident that claimed 19 lives in the country’s mountainous Dading region.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed its sincere sympathy to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government and people of Nepal. The ministry also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the crash.
The Incident According to police statements cited by Reuters, the passenger bus was carrying 44 people when it veered off a mountainous road before dawn on Monday. The vehicle reportedly plunged approximately 200 meters (650 feet)
The crash resulted in the deaths of 19 passengers, including three foreign nationals. Authorities confirmed that those killed included citizens of the United Kingdom, China, and India.
A further 25 passengers were injured. Among them were a New Zealander and a Chinese national. The injured were transported to hospitals in Kathmandu, where they are receiving medical treatment.
A Challenging Terrain
Nepal’s mountainous geography has long posed risks for road travel. Narrow highways carved into steep hillsides, unpredictable weather, and limited safety infrastructure contribute to recurring accidents, particularly during early morning and monsoon periods.
The Dading region, located in central Nepal, is characterized by winding roads that connect remote districts to the capital. Rescue operations in such areas often face logistical challenges due to terrain and accessibility constraints.
UAE’s Message of Solidarity
The UAE’s statement underscored its support for Nepal during a time of national mourning. Expressions of condolence from governments form part of established diplomatic practice, reflecting humanitarian concern beyond bilateral ties.
The relationship between the UAE and Nepal includes a significant expatriate community, economic cooperation, and development partnerships. In moments of tragedy, official solidarity reinforces diplomatic goodwill and shared humanitarian values.
Ongoing Response
Nepalese authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Initial reports suggest the accident occurred in the early hours, but officials have not yet released a definitive cause.
Emergency responders worked through difficult terrain to reach the crash site and assist survivors. Hospitals in Kathmandu remain engaged in treating the injured, with several reported to be in stable condition.
The tragedy highlights ongoing road safety concerns in mountainous regions and the human cost of infrastructure limitations in challenging environments.
