Dubai: Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum shared moments from a traditional Indian cultural performance that welcomed Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his official visit to India.

In an Instagram story, Sheikh Hamdan posted visuals of Sheikh Mohamed alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they watched a vibrant dance performance at Palam Air Base, where the UAE President received a formal welcome.

A powerful cultural welcome

According to the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, the performance was Pung Cholom, a traditional drum dance from the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. The name translates to “roar of the drum.”

Known for its intensity, Pung Cholom builds from steady rhythms to a high-energy climax. Performers play the pung, a barrel-shaped drum, while executing fast footwork, spins, and acrobatic movements. The dance combines devotion, music, and physical strength, and holds a respected place in Manipuri culture.

Recognised by UNESCO

Beyond its visual impact, the dance carries deep cultural significance. Pung Cholom forms part of the Sankirtan tradition and was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.

Traditionally performed at major religious and cultural events, the dance served as a fitting tribute during a high-level state visit.

A stage set for diplomacy

During the performance, the stage featured portraits of Sheikh Mohamed and Prime Minister Modi, along with welcome messages in Hindi and Arabic. India’s state broadcaster Doordarshan aired the visuals as part of its coverage.

Sheikh Hamdan joined a high-level delegation accompanying the UAE President on the visit, which marks Sheikh Mohamed’s third trip to India since assuming office. Several senior ministers and officials were also part of the delegation.

A continuing cultural exchange

This is not the first time Sheikh Hamdan has highlighted Indian cultural traditions. During a visit in April 2025, he shared visuals of Chendamelam, a traditional percussion art form from Kerala.

Through these moments, Sheikh Hamdan continues to offer his millions of followers a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the countries he visits, reinforcing people-to-people ties alongside official diplomacy.
