Saudi Arabia has officially confirmed the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon. As a result, tomorrow will mark the first day of the holy month across the Kingdom.
The announcement followed coordinated moon-sighting observations in Hawtat Sudair and Tumair in Al-Majma’ah Governorate—two locations traditionally associated with Ramadan crescent monitoring. Earlier, Abdulaziz Al-Muainaa from the Al Hareeq Observatory indicated that the sun would set at 5:52 pm and that weather conditions were favourable for crescent visibility, reinforcing expectations of confirmation.
With the crescent now verified, Muslims across Saudi Arabia will begin fasting at dawn tomorrow, ushering in a month centered on spiritual reflection, prayer, charity, and community.
The Significance of Ramadan
Ramadan marks the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and stands as the holiest period in Islam. It commemorates the revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during Laylat Al Qadr, also known as the Night of Decree. This sacred night falls within the final ten nights of Ramadan and is believed to carry spiritual reward greater than a thousand months of worship.
Throughout the month, Muslims observe daily fasting from dawn until sunset, refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours. They break the fast at sunset with Iftar, while Suhoor is observed before dawn.
Beyond physical abstinence, Ramadan emphasizes deeper spiritual discipline. Worshippers increase prayer, give charity, and practice compassion, reinforcing the month’s focus on reflection, generosity, and community.
Duration of Ramadan 2026
Ramadan lasts either 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon that signals the beginning of the following month, Shawwal. Astronomical forecasts had suggested that Ramadan 2026 would likely span 29 days, though the final duration will depend on the official moon sighting at the end of the month.
As the holy month begins, preparations across Saudi Arabia intensify, with mosques readying for Taraweeh prayers, charitable initiatives expanding, and families gathering for shared meals and worship. The confirmed sighting marks the formal start of a period deeply rooted in faith, tradition, and collective devotion.
