Nationwide Extension Announced

The UAE has extended distance learning for all nurseries, kindergartens, and public and private schools until April 17, 2026.

The decision, announced by the Ministry of Education, applies to students, teachers, and administrative staff across the country and is based on prioritizing safety and well-being.

Authorities confirmed that the situation will be reviewed weekly, leaving room for further adjustments depending on developments.

Continued Shift from Earlier Plans

The extension follows an ongoing period of remote education that began on March 2 and carried into Term 3 after authorities advanced the spring break in response to regional tensions.

Initially, schools were expected to resume in early April. However, the latest decision extends distance learning further, keeping students at home through mid-April.

By this stage, educational institutions had already adjusted to remote operations. Schools shifted classes online, while students and teachers continued learning from different locations and time zones.

Schools Begin Academic Year Online

Meanwhile, Indian and Pakistani curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the northern emirates have already started the new academic year online, following directives from local education authorities.

In particular, kindergarten students, many of whom are experiencing virtual classrooms for the first time, began lessons from home.

To make the transition smoother, schools conducted preparatory mock classes over the weekend, helping students and parents become familiar with the online format.

Conditions for On-Site Learning

While distance learning remains mandatory, authorities have allowed private schools to request a return to in-person classes under strict conditions.

Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) stated that any institution seeking to reopen must submit detailed justifications, with each request reviewed individually and subject to final approval from the Ministry of Education.

Universities Move Toward Hybrid Models

Higher education institutions are following a more flexible approach.

A directive from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research allows universities to resume on-campus learning for programs that require practical components, such as clinical training, laboratory work, and field-based studies.

Examinations may also be conducted on campus under this phased approach.

Mixed Approach Across Universities

Despite the partial reopening framework, several universities have opted to remain fully remote for now.

Institutions such as the American University of Sharjah, American University of Ras Al Khaimah, and American University in Dubai have confirmed continued online operations, reflecting a cautious approach.

Current Direction

The UAE’s education system is operating under a controlled, adaptive model that balances continuity of learning with safety considerations.

While schools remain fully remote, universities are gradually reintroducing in-person elements where necessary, signaling a phased and flexible response to evolving conditions.
