The introduction of the next-generation Da Vinci 5 Surgical System marks a major leap forward in precision, safety, and minimally invasive care in the UAE.
A first for the UAE in robotic surgery
King’s College Hospital London – Dubai has become the first hospital in the UAE to introduce the Da Vinci 5 Surgical System, opening a new chapter in advanced robotic surgery in the region.
To mark the launch, the hospital showcased the technology through a public display at its Dubai Hills campus. As a result, it became the first institution in the country to present the platform in a dedicated, open setting. The two-day event, held on February 2 and 3, featured live demonstrations led by the hospital’s surgical teams.
Through this initiative, the hospital reinforced its role in accelerating access to cutting-edge medical technologies while expanding the range of complex procedures that can be performed locally.
What makes the Da Vinci 5 a step change
The Da Vinci 5 stands as the most advanced robotic surgical platform currently available. It enhances surgical precision, efficiency, and clinical insight by combining greater computing power with intelligent data tools and a surgeon-focused design.
Most notably, the system introduces Force Feedback technology, which allows surgeons to feel and measure the pressure they apply during surgery. This added tactile awareness improves control and significantly reduces the risk of tissue damage.
At the same time, enhanced 3D visualisation delivers sharper and more detailed anatomical views. Improved workflows further support operating room efficiency, enabling teams to treat more patients safely.
Beyond the operating room
In addition to its surgical capabilities, the platform extends its impact beyond the operating theatre. It offers real-time collaboration tools, data-driven performance insights, and personalised surgical training modules.
Together, these features strengthen team coordination, support continuous skill development, and help drive better surgical outcomes over time.
Commitment to world-class care
Speaking on the milestone, Kimberley Pierce, Chief Executive Officer of King’s College Hospital London – Dubai, said the introduction of the Da Vinci 5 reflects the hospital’s commitment to delivering global standards of care in the UAE.
She emphasised that patients in Dubai deserve access to the same medical advances available at leading hospitals worldwide, adding that investment in next-generation surgical tools remains central to the hospital’s mission.
Expanding what can be done safely
The hospital’s surgical team brings extensive experience in robotic and minimally invasive procedures across multiple specialties.
In this context, Dr Rehan Saif, Consultant Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgeon and abdominal multi-organ transplantologist, highlighted the role of advanced robotics in complex liver and transplant surgeries. He explained that the Da Vinci 5 enables highly intricate procedures through smaller incisions, reducing surgical trauma and supporting faster recovery—an especially critical benefit in living donor transplantation.
Similarly, Dr Ahmed Hassan, Consultant Esophago-Gastric, Bariatric, and General Surgeon, underscored the system’s value in cancer and upper gastrointestinal surgery. He noted that greater accuracy in confined anatomical spaces helps reduce complications and improve patient outcomes.
Meanwhile, Dr Firas Younis, Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon, pointed to improved ergonomics and visual clarity. According to him, these enhancements reduce physical strain during lengthy procedures while improving consistency and patient safety across specialties.
Adding to this, Dr Atif Alvi said adopting the Da Vinci 5 strengthens the hospital’s position as a centre for advanced surgical care by equipping clinicians with tools that support sharper decision-making and higher precision.
Wider access to advanced procedures
Looking ahead, the Da Vinci 5 will support minimally invasive surgery across a broad range of specialties, including transplant, urology, gynaecology, thoracic, cardiac, and general surgery.
King’s College Hospital London – Dubai already operates the widely used Da Vinci Xi platform. With the addition of the Da Vinci 5, the hospital takes a clear step forward in its robotic surgery programme, significantly expanding advanced treatment options for patients in the UAE.
Shaping the future of healthcare
Ultimately, the introduction of the Da Vinci 5 forms part of the hospital’s long-term investment in advanced healthcare solutions. Rather than simply adopting new technology, King’s College Hospital London – Dubai is positioning itself as an active contributor to the future of surgical care in the region.
For patients, the impact is straightforward: access to more advanced procedures, greater precision, faster recovery, and world-class surgical innovation, without the need to seek care abroad.
