As the UAE marks January 17 as the UAE Day of Solidarity, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has called on residents to pause and reflect on the nation’s unity, shared resolve, and collective strength.

In a message shared on social media platform X, Sheikh Hamdan, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, described the day as a moment of national reflection and togetherness.

“On January 17 each year, we reflect on the resolve, unity and solidarity shown by the people of the UAE, standing proudly behind their national flag to safeguard the country’s achievements and uphold its global standing,” he wrote.

Nationwide moment of observance

As part of the official commemoration, Sheikh Hamdan invited people across the country to take part in a unified national moment.

At 11 a.m., UAE national media channels will broadcast the national anthem, marking a shared moment of reflection across the nation.

“We invite everyone across the UAE to follow our national media channels, which will broadcast the national anthem at 11am today, as we renew our pledge and determination to continue advancing and elevating our beloved country,” he added.

In doing so, the observance reinforces a sense of shared purpose and national cohesion.

Why January 17 holds national meaning

January 17 is a significant date for the UAE. Previously, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan regarded the date as a sign of strength, unity, and solidarity, symbolizing how the country comes together during difficult times.

The day commemorates the events of January 17, 2022, when Yemeni Houthi militants attacked civilian infrastructure in Abu Dhabi, particularly the Musaffah ICAD 3 region and a building site near Abu Dhabi International Airport. The attacks killed three bystanders and injured six more. The Houthis later claimed responsibility.

A lasting symbol of unity

Since then, January 17 has come to symbolize the UAE’s collective commitment and national unity. Rather than focusing on division or fear, the day emphasizes shared values, mutual support, and a commitment to security and growth.

Finally, the UAE Day of Solidarity serves as a reminder that national strength is generated not just through accomplishment but also through unity, recollection, and a shared feeling of responsibility for the country’s future.
